What is ABI (Application Binary Interface)?

The ABI is the JSON description of a contract's functions, inputs, outputs, and events that wallets and applications use to encode calls and decode results.

The Solidity compiler emits the ABI alongside bytecode. Front-ends, scripts, and block explorers need it to know that a call to transfer(address,uint256) should be encoded as a particular four-byte selector followed by padded arguments.
