What is Gas?

Gas is the unit that measures computational work on an EVM chain; every opcode costs a set amount of gas, and users pay gas multiplied by the gas price to have a transaction executed.

Gas protects the network from infinite loops and prices scarce block space. A transaction specifies a gas limit (the most it may use) and a gas price (what it pays per unit). On most chains you pay only for gas actually consumed; on Monad the fee is charged on the gas limit, so setting a tight, accurate limit saves money.
