What is IDE (integrated development environment)?

An IDE is a single application that combines a code editor, compiler, debugger, and deployment tools; for smart contracts, a browser IDE such as Monsmith or Remix removes local setup entirely.

Local toolchains such as Hardhat and Foundry are powerful but need installation and configuration. A browser IDE trades some of that flexibility for immediacy: open a tab, paste a contract, and you are compiling within seconds.
